Really busy place. Good food for a hangover though. Our waitress kinda stunk. No personality and acted like she didnt have time for us. But the food was really good and huge so that made up for it. They dont take debit cards here - so make sure u get cash or you will have to use the ATM there and pay the fee. I got the breakfast burrito with green chili and it was really good. My sister got a dish - i think something skillet and it was all onions. So i felt bad that she paid like $7 for onions and not much else. boo. I would go back. You will wait though so prepare yourself!

Great breakfast for lunch. Small place, good character. Almost everything is good. Huevos. All you need to know.

Best breakfast I have had in years! The burrito and huevos rancheros were awesome! Incredible service as well.

Best breakfast anywhere! For the past 19 years or so, any time I've been in Colorado Springs around breakfast time I've stopped here. I've even arrange my trip itineraries around breakfast here. But, if you're too big of a wuss to not see the humor in some good natured ribbing, then you should probably stay away and leave that stool open for the rest of us.

Enjoy breakfast, lunch or a late nite belly buster @ a Colorado Springs landmark! The original purple castle has limited hours so if you miss them head to Acacia Park and the big dinner is on the South East corner! Food is sinful. But beware of the green chili! Gary likes to melt things.... I always order mine on the side! Everyone seems to have a sense of humor, so make sure you have one too! If you become an overly needy customer they may very well make you a princess and post your photo online! I like to ride my bicycle in for a meal, that way I don't feel as bad about the calories I'm intaking! AND REMEMBER THEY DON'T ACCEPT CREDIT CARDS! The ATM has a fee so be prepared.

Definitely a good place for some great grub. We've been looking for a place to get a decent breakfast and we weren't disappointed with King's Chef Diner. My girlfriend and I ended up sharing their breakfast burrito, which is packed with eggs, potatoes, grilled onions and sausage. It's topped with cheese and your choice of green chili sauce or thick gravy - both delicious. The green chili was touted as "hot", seemed closer to mild and that's coming from someone just developing their palate for spice, but it made the burrito more exciting nonetheless. The gravy option changes the entire story, making the meal smoother and creamier, but just as good. Of course I had to try both at the same time which I now believe is the only way to eat this dish. For being selected as the best meal in Colorado by Food Network Magazine, I'm a little surprised it wasn't the best breakfast burrito I've ever had, but it was definitely worth the eight bucks. The service was great and we didn't see any angry Gary's as experienced by the other Easter poster (but for the same poster, it really is the polite thing to do to extricate a crying baby form a public place). We even got souvenir stickers. While it wasn't the busiest hour, the place was about half full and we never had to worry about emptying our drinks for the attentive and friendly server. Decor and ambience were the only issues I took with King's. The music, while good, was too loud for smooth conversation and the colors were a little obnoxious - seemed geared towards children. At some point I felt like I was in an episode of The Simpsons. Still the place was cheery and clean. Definitely check this place out if you have the opportunity.

The green chili sauce! Get the breakfast burrito with the chili sauce. The full order might be a bit much, so get the half order unless you are really hungry!

fucking awesome... valentine diner shaped like a castle... food kicks ass and the owner is so cool. I didn't realize it was cash only, and so as I was going to leave my wife there (after we ordered) while I hunted for an ATM, he was like, "no, you can do that after you eat. you're hungry. food first." that is so trusting and cool.

If you are on death row and your last meal is a breakfast then you have got to order it from the King's Chef Diner. The servings are made for the hungary and the bacon is the best in the Springs. You will always get a laugh from the staff and crowd. If you want to get a seat, I suggest you show up mid morning (9:30 - 10 AM)

Carving some serious breakfast food, my husband and I came here while on a road trip from San Diego, CA to Dayton, OH. My husband saw that this place had stellar Yelp reviews so we had to check it out! So glad we did cuz man- was I carving a quality breakfast burrito!!! The inside of this place is small- it has a counter around the kitchen/cash register area like an old-time diner and some seats by a large window. It can fit like 10 ppl max, which I personally like since it gave us a great opportunity to chat up the owner of this place and get a front row seat to watch our food cooked. As soon as a menu was in my hand, I zoned in on their Breakfast Burrito, and was greeted with a pleasant surprise. Food Network Mag's winner of Tastiest Breakfast in Colorado? YES! SIGN ME UP!! This burrito did not disappoint- it was a piece of perfection wrapped into a tortilla and covered in the best Colorado Green Chili ever. The inside really was the definition of burrito perfection- fluffy scrambled eggs, delicious sausage chucks, grilled onions, crispy hash browns and gooey melty cheese all completely mixed together! SO refreshing to have a breakfast burrito that makes a point to have every ingredient in every bite!! Honestly, wtf is the point of having a variety of ingredients if they aren't mixed together! If I want a bite of just cheese, I clearly would have ordered a cheese burrito. Anyways, no problems with this here- just a delicious symphony of flavors in every bite :) And the best part- the Colorado Green Chili. Oh sweet Jesus, DELICIOUS!!! So flavorful and hella spicy! It definitely kicked my burrito up a notch- from Amazing to F-CK YEAH! This burrito is too good to miss- if you are in Colorado Springs, GET SOME!!!

Awesome place, people and food. The small greasy spoon diner that dishes awesome food and equally awesome abuse. They have the best (and hottest) green chili I've had in a long time. I also appreciate a place that will whack my hand with a spoon for trying to peak into the contains with lollipops for those who finish their entire meal. It was pointed out that I wasn't finished with breakfast. Great place to cure a hangover.

OMG what a great little place. The food here was great I only wish it was in California not Colorado Springs. Don't be fooled by the looks on the outside, this place is a friendly little place with lots of charm. The only downside is that they only take cash, which could be a downer if I wasn't prepared.

    (5)
  • Jenny L.

AWESOME BACON!!!! Seriously. It's super thick and crispy. I dream about it. Their green chili will burn your face off and you will love it. The wait staff is so much fun. Scoot over so they can sit down with you while they take your order. Our server even made sure a guy who followed my friends and I in wasn't bugging us. I'm fairly certain that little lady could have taken him in a heartbeat. Don't forget this place is cash only. Bonus...they are open pretty late on the weekends for you and your drunk friends to get some chow before you head home after a long night of dancing.

  • Adam X.

I'm so mad... this place has decent food and vegetarian sausage and anything on the menu will cure a hangover but... the owner is a terrible human being. He has sexist policies, the easiest is see is try to get a sucker from the Clean Plate Club if you are male, and is an over all jerk to his customers and employees. The place's "shtick" has gone too far and I won't spend money to support this type of business. My new downtown mantra is "Support Local GOOD Businesses." Try Smileys on Tejon instead.

  • Warren P.

I don't understand what all the fuss is about. Is everyone wasted when they eat here? The food is as generic as it gets. The service is rude (although apparently you're supposed to enjoy being treated like shit, as if that's part of the appeal). I don't get it. You people can have this shit hole.

Stopped in today to grab lunch (breakfast burrito with green chili) and it was great. Total attack on the taste buds, cozy atmosphere, and easy on the wallet. RIP to the former owner Sam who passed away today. Legendary Colorado Springs diner for sure!!

    (4)
  • Jim H.

Great food and great diner ambiance. Reminds me of a tiny place my Grandpa used to take me in Gilroy CA. The portions are amazingly large. The half order on most items is still more than you get elsewhere. The prices are a tad bit higher, but you get a lot for your money. The green chili and the sausage gravy are fantastic. Best diner food in town.

  • Jason K.

Bad ass green chili. One of my fav places. Love the attitude as well!

    (5)
  • Chris H.

Great breakfast. Great hamburger. I even like the atmosphere. Not much to say that hasn't been said in all the other reviews. (Except, Stephen F. Sorry Stephen, this is one of the rare times that I don't agree with you.)

    (5)
  • Ashley F.

I have never seen such insanely large portions in my life! I got a half order of "The Thing", and I didn't even make a dent in it! My mom got a breakfast burrito and she couldn't even eat half of it. My step-brother got a patty melt, and was somehow able to get the "Clean Plate Club" sticker. Being from MN, the green chile was waaaay too spicy for me. But the guy behind the counter was awesome and gave me a bunch of milk to quell the burning. Very good time overall.

  • Rick P.

Awesome food with huge portions. Great for a hangover! Has two locations, but you have to try the castle once!

    (4)
  • L. J.

Suck it, Haters. You want local, it's local. Be prepared to have a rousing conversation about politics or religion over your Grump and green chile. I prefer to get cussed at by other customers over my favorite french toast. There are only seats for about 10 people in this little purple castle but always worth the wait to cure that hangover you got from Tejon St. the night before. Don't forget to get your sticker for finishing your plate and make sure you wear it proudly.

    (5)
  • Sheila H.

Wow! Small place with a big appetite! Huge portions and the best hash browns I have ever had!!

    (5)
  • Elizabeth N.

I like the big portions, I like the atmosphere. Great place if you're not on a diet, but too greasy for me to be really wowed.

If you need to lose weight, don't come here. If you are looking for the greatest breakfast in town, do come here. If you are not a regular here, be prepared for mockery, and cramped quarters, its a lot of fun to eat here! One of my favorite local spots.

  • Judy B.

Best patty melt I've ever had, and I'm 70!! No one should go away Hungry. Friendly staff. GBC Tx.

Great food! Yeah they bust your chops, well worth the trip. They can't say anything we wouldn't already hear at our fire station. Green chili sauce was awesome. When we walked in, we improved the ratio of guys to girls, oh by the way, Friday is girls only (kidding, sort of). We cleaned our plates and got the stickers to prove it. Great food! I just came back from breakfast here. It was awesome! The portions are indeed ridiculous. I'm not accustomed to large breakfasts, but I came hungry and ordered the "Mini" breakfast burrito with green chili. The chili was a little hotter than expected but not too bad. The combination of eggs, sausage, hashbrowns, and onions in the burrito work well together. And a sprinkling of cheese on top completes the package of delectable goodness. As for the size of the thing, it's comparable to a Chipotle burrito, I would say. I could have eaten a little more, but not much. I came looking for a tasty breakfast full of quality calories and I left feeling satisfied. That's all I can ask.

The green chile is to die for. My favorite way to enjoy it is slopper style.

My husband and I went to King Chef's wee location and got our meal for free due to an IndyGive donation. We had a great experience. I had the huevos rancheros. Not the best I've ever had, but they were easily enough for three people. Huge! Husband got a burger and loved it. The best part was the guy working the counter. He was super friendly, and we chatted with him and his regular customers as they came in. It's a great place to feel like you are a part of the community. A must experience in Colorado Springs.

The food is fabulous. The Grump is possibly the best hangover cure out there. However, the owner has some major mental health issues. When we asked for a table, the owner started cussing us out and refused to serve us. I'm not talking rude-charming, I'm talking rude-crazy. By principle, I will not be eating there again. Don't need that negative energy in my food. I suppose if you can avoid him, take your chances.

When it comes to Diners this is as good as it gets! My sisters, my nephew and I were visiting town from the Boston area and were looking for something cheap and easy - didn't expect the FUN that we had there! After arriving we took a seat at the tiny bar area and ordered up, and when I asked for a spoon to stir my coffee they said "this is a diner" and pointed to my knife, haha. However, the food was great and the owner and the waiter was a total riot, had us laughing! We had so much fun we came back the next day! If you are trying to watch what you eat, it's not the place! But if you like the occasional diner food, this is for you!! :)

I heart the Purple Castle. Best hangover cure known to Colorado Springs. Solid no nonsense food and HUGE portions (you get a sticker if you finish it all!).

King Chef is up there with Pike's Peak and Garden of the Gods as the redeeming qualities of Colorado Springs. I miss this place terribly. I have never had a bad meal or a bad experience here (despite the terrible hangovers I would nurse here). Over my years here I got to know some of the very friendly staff (though during a rush they might not have time to chat) and thought they did a great job all the way around. Last time I was at King Chef there were rumors of Sue retiring, which is sad because everyone will miss her abuse but I'm sure she does have a life outside of this place. Maybe once she's gone I could finally get a lollipop along with my Clean Plate Club sticker, Sue always said only little girls get lollipops. The food is fantastic. If the breakfast wasn't so good I would have tried the lunch more than 3 times in my ~30 trips here. There are fierce loyalties to different items, and I am partial to The Thing. All of the classic breakfast items (eggs, hash browns, meat, cheese) all piled on top of texas toast and covered in green chile (which is fierce) or gravy. Delicious. Personally, I go with scrambled eggs, sausage, and extra green chile. Someday I will be back. I swear it.

This is one of those places that you always think back and wish you could go again and again and again... Alas, this was a place my wife and I stopped on a road trip across the country, but boy was the food delicious! The inside of this little purple castle had enough room for a counter around a grill and some other seating and that was about it, haha, but the walls were plastered with awards they had won, mostly from their green chili. So after seeing this and reading reviews here on Yelp I made sure I got the green chili on my food and it lived up to the hype! I ordered 'The Thing' and it had a nice kick and good flavor, not just another bland fireball in your mouth that some places like to do with spicy foods. The texas toast, has browns, sausage and eggs all tasted so good and again, that green chili just made it that much better! This is definitely one of those greasier foods you don't want to be eating all the time, but it's one of those pleasure foods that you should go and splurge with every once in a while. Make sure you bring cash, otherwise you'll have to use the ATM there. It wasn't very crowded when I went but I can imagine this small place can get busy!

Recently upon a return visit to the "springs" I was able to get back to my all time favorite diner - the Chef. Ok...I'll be honest....I went twice in a three day stretch. Still the most mind blowing breakfast creations imaginable and well worth the heartburn from copious amounts of bacon, taters, eggs, jesus' eyebrows, country gravy and house made green chili. Order the GRUMP with a side of chili and EARN your sticker! This is not a place for the weak and the full meal will make you weep. Gary (the owner) is an awesome guy who has ran the show for years now and has expanded the place to a second location PLUS has the green chili on whole foods shelves now. Always go back to the purple castle if possible - it's where all the magic happened....

    (5)
  • Mysti A.

The King Chef, I have to say the best hangover food around Colorado Springs. The staff can be a little testy at times, but that is part of the spice of it. There are two locations, the new location is larger for groups and the like. Good food for the cost. You will be swimming in your portions of food, especially if you add the hot, hot green chili Yum!

  • Elissa H.

This greasy diner rocks! The omelettes are fantastic, the breakfast sandwich is amazing, they use real cheese, the hashbrowns are actually cooked all the way through, yummy! Also, if you like spicy homemade green chile, give KC's a try...many rave about it (I personally don't care for all the raw garlic, but that is subjective). Service is good, if you like Boston-style attitude (those from Mass know what I mean...the waitstaff is competent but not friendly). Ambiance is decent. I preferred the old castle and sitting elbow to elbow at the cramped counter, but who am I to stand in the way of progress. If you are looking for a large greasy homestyle breakfast, this is the place. Pros: Portions, price, taste. Cons: I miss the castle. With their progress comes my sadness;) Beware of what I call the PPPs (arconym for what happens AFTER eating this greasy breakfast). Plan a pit stop before hitting the trail for a long hike;)

A breath of fresh air from the stuffy meetings I came all the way to CO-Springs for. Just great simple foods with a green/hot sauce that tastes as good as it burns. I had the breakfast burrito with hot sauce on the side. Very large, very satisfying. A few facts: Cash only, they don't take credit card but there is an ATM down the street. Mainly counter seating though I think there were tables outside as well. Oh yeah, the place looks like a small purple castle.

  • Lee S.

Love this place. Great diner. Great atmosphere. Fantastic breakfast and lunch especially if you like huevos rancheros and similar dishes. Friendly guys behind the counter, but it looks like they can get busy during the rush.

    (4)
  • Jill k.

crazy exterior, cramped quarters (i think there were 10 seats), friendly service, huge portions, crazy hot sauce, and the most amazing potatoes! a word about potatoes... i love potatoes. in all forms. mashed, baked, french fried... i love them all! king's chef has this crazy dish of basically hash browns, with grilled onions, bacon, cheese, and then some. it is so good! and then you get a sticker if you finish it! as if it couldn't get any better!

    (5)
  • Melody L.

Puts all other breakfasts to shame. I have no idea what the folks were talking about the staff being "testy" or rude. We found them playful and fun in a teasing way. I suspect you should check your attitude. I almost spit OJ when our waiter told us the building used to be a bounce house. :-D I didn't tell my family about the large portions just so I could see their faces--priceless! Being from Texas, we found the hot green chile to be right up our alley and wound up buying two jars to take home--a high complement from my crew!

    (5)
  • Stephen F.

This is a good diner but I wouldn't get that excited about it. It is very small and you will likely eat outside if they are busy. The hot sauce they are known for was way too hot for me and I like hot stuff.

    (2)
  • Tim B.

Absolutely fantastic. Have the Thing (if you like it really hot) or the Grump (if you don't feel like smelling like green chili for 2 days).

    (5)
  • Andrew M.

I call this a "fundamental" restaurant. Fundamental in that it is one of the restaurants that forms the foundation for eating out in Colorado Springs - it's solid - an anchor. King's Chef serves solid delicious diner food. The burgers and other sandwiches are just great. The Grump and Thing are meals that you'll come back for. My favorite - the Pablo Picasso sandwich.

  • Lula Mae W.

My dad's favorite restaurant. The food is good and the portions are generous as is the name-calling if you can't finish your breakfast ya nancy boy!

  • Jeffrey R.

Voted the best diner west of the Mississippi, and the best diner for locals, the purple castle on Costilla seat 10 people. The food uses the best ingredients, is cooked right in front of you, and served up in larger than lif portions. This place rocks!! Just don't piss off the staff (both of them), or they will literally kick you out. The only diner I know of that is run by 20-something extreme mountain bikers...

    (5)
  • Shawn C.

Best breakfast place in town. Especially if you like hot/spicy green sauce on your breakfast burrito. Huge portions, great staff (only two), but cramped seating. But who cares as the food is worth the wait.

    (5)
  • Michael B.

Let me start by saying the service alone was enough to get some stars, even if the food wasn't one of the best breakfast burritos I've ever had. That being said the breakfast burrito was one of the best I've ever had. It was huge, fresh, came with gravy and green chili sauce. The sauce had some kick, server suggested to go half and half on the two and it mellows it out. He was spot on. The place was packed but our wait was minimal and the food came out quick and piping hot. Could not ask for a better breakfast. I'll be back.

  • Rob T.

I lover this place but today's waitress talked for 10 minutes about how she is gonna train the new girls or fire them all. Its rude to discuss your workplace drama with other customers but to call them out by name to your customers..thats low. Plus some are my friends.. shame on you for being so unprofessional in an awesome restaurant. Think you just lost your favorite customer. The burgers are the bomb, but the new cook needs some training since this waitress wants to train ppl. It used to be large portions and cash only. A happy meal had more fries than what you gave today. Things have changed the last few weeks, for the worse. Im thinking you lost a favorite customer today.

Great mom & pop place. Great service. We ate outside on a lovely day. The food was great, and the portions are huge. Order the half portions - they are plenty. Counter ordering and small dining area on stools only. Pay cash only. Good burgers. Kids meals. Known for chili which is spicy, green and very good. Great Mexican influence. Food served fresh and hot, though a bit greasy. Only drawback: smallest bathroom known to man. Definitely recommend!

Had the pleasure of making a return visit to this cute diner during a recent visit to our son. Before leaving from the east coast, I was so looking forward to another breakfast and wasn't disappointed! The four of us fully enjoyed our respective breakfasts, enjoying the ambiance of the diner. I refer to this diner as The Carnigie Deli of breakfasts, for those who might know about the one-time famous NYC dining establishment - abundant amount of food for the price!! Can't wait to return to Colorado Springs and dine here again...

I have been to Kings several times. Each time, I enjoy the good food and fast service. Their Green Chile is awesome (and that comes from someone who KNOWS) Green Chile. If you're not sure about heat - order it on the side. We order the big dishes and split it with the kids. Then we smother the food ourselves. Food is served hot and fresh from the greasy grille. They have a great twist on greasy breakfast food with goodness. This is not a restaurant for atmosphere. It's loud, lots of people, and fast. My kind of place. I like dives. Expect to pay CASH. They don't accept credit cards or checks. There is an ATM in the restaurant.

Awesome food. Great staff. Huge portions. No joke. Eat here. Cash only and tiny, FYI. A true 50's diner. Thick cut bacon. Green chili was very nice.

Great food and customer service! Go with the breakfast burrito and get it half and half. If you don't know what to order just ask the cook to prepare something special for you. They do offer a Government discount and a police discount also.

Based on a tip from a friend, we were told to go here and get the Colorado Burrito. This was the BEST breakfast I've ever had. We live in Iowa and ever since have been trying to recreate the burrito here at home - and of course failing. We ordered their green chili and it is great to use on other dishes here at home. We just can't replicate this amazing burrito. MUST visit. MUST get burrito!!!!

Great place, all day breakfast, EXCELLENT service by Gary who seated and served us on outside patio. The place was packed; we had to wait 20 min. The Pancho Via was delicious! Only had the half size, and it was filling.

This is truly a gem in the rough. The menu items are freshly made and are delicious - not a bad cup of coffee either.

The thing that initially got me curious is that it looks like a kids bouncy house and the banner on the roof said "The Food Sucks and The Service is Worse" (or something like that). How could I not want to try?? On top of that, all the guys in our office headed to King's Chef at least a couple times a month, every time they'd come back in the best mood. So I finally decided to try it. YUM!!!! Best burgers and even though I didn't want to have pepper on my fries, he (the chef, aka "Burger Nazi") made me. So I had pepper on the fries! WONDERFUL!!! I've since moved away from The Springs... but I think about this place and it always makes me wish I lived closer again. CHEERS!!

I consider myself somewhat of a breakfast burrito connoisseur and King's Chef's is one of the best ones I've ever put in my face. Do the half gravy half salsa! Other stuff: Great service, cool atmosphere. The owner runs one hell of a restaurant. Well done!

Great food, Awesome staff.(other places should take note on how well this staff works together!!) Burgers are great and the Chef salad is fantastic. Fun menu to read, interesting options. A cant go wrong unless the sometimes loud music might bother you.

Had some friends visiting from Texas and I took them here for breakfast one morning and they loved it. I've been to this location a couple times and their downtown location a couple times as well. The food is diner food but it's great diner food. The atmosphere is very casual and they have regulars so you better get here early or you might not get a seat. A full plate is a ton of food. A 1/2 plate is half a ton of food but doable if you have a hearty appetite. I normally get a 1/4 plate so I don't go into a food coma. Highly recommend this place for out of town guests as well as for locals. Try the green chili!

I have been here probably about 20 times and it is just about the same every time. Food: Food is pretty exceptional. Coffee is from a local roaster and has a decent taste. The food is exceptional. I have been here mostly for breakfast, but have also visited during dinner and the food is decent every time. The best in my opinion is the Breakfast Burrito with red salsa. It is what they are known for and the salsa always seems to be the right flavor. The next best in my opinion is the Huevos Rancheros. It is a huge serving and it is topped with Avocados. An excellent choice! Service: This is where King's really loses me. I understand that it is kind of fun a few times to have rude abrupt staff, but after a short while it really wares off. On most weekends they post their rude "bull dog" of a server behind the counter, and if you are not quick enough with your responses he becomes belligerent and offensive. Also, if you are alone and request a table instead of the bar, he will sneer at you until you leave. I guess it is part of the atmosphere they are trying to encourage. When waitresses come to your table they take your name with your order which is a great personalization. The owner is often the one manning the register. He is friendly enough and seems to run a tight ship. Ambiance: Blaring dub-step music at 8:00 am on a Saturday or Sunday is not desirous! This environment is anything but peaceful. It is packed on most mornings and the hectic music is enough to drive even the most sane person bonkers. Overall, if you are willing to put up with the environment, you will be pleasantly surprised by a really decent breakfast and pretty good dinner.

I couldn't believe how quickly my green chili burger got to me. These guys and gals really work to make sure you have everything you need! Just remember, the place is CASH ONLY. I wish that was a little more prominently displayed for first timers.

Perfect 5 stars for the "small diner/greasy spoon" type place. Just two employees and enough seats for maybe 10 people shoulder to shoulder. I ordered some sloppy mess of a breakfast meal with potatoes, onions, peppers, eggs, and sausage gravy. Everything was cooked to perfection just as I like it. Not to mention that there was a huge amount of food. The wife ordered a grilled cheese and bacon fries. I have never seen such a large amount of fries and cheese and fresh cooked bacon all in one place outside of a basket. She couldn't finish. They don't take credit or debit so bring some cash. Not much more to say about this one. Just go there and enjoy.

Tiny little dinner that serves a lot of food. Great overall experience. Good food, and lots of it. The server was great she never let me see the bottom of my coffee cup. When we got there it was empty, it filled up fast. Don't forget bring cash!!!

There's some serious Yelpers crushing for King's Chef. I might be missing something because I left here satisfied but by no means overwhelmed. The sandwich had a generous portion of meat with fresh bread. The fries were crisp but slightly overseasoned. I can't complain about the counter lady, she definitely was attentive. Also, beverages from a can rather than a fountain. The dining room is cramped, it's difficult to get out of your seat without elbowing the head of the customer behind you. The bathroom, located outside, was smaller than a porta-potty. Reminder: porta-potties are not large. Somehow they managed to cram the water heater in this micro-room as well. If I ever develop claustrophobia, I'll be able to tell my therapist exactly where it began.

There are two locations for this local eatery and this location is the better of the two by far in my opinion. The whole place is MAYBE 13ft by 30ft if that. So its just bar seating only. There are NO waitresses at this location, just a few people manning the grille and orders/cashier. The tight space makes for a great old-school atmosphere and good conversation is common between guests and staff. I've never had anyone be rude or short with me. The food is top-notch, and they've not made choices lightly on where they source their food from either. I talked at length with one of their staff who explained how they've gone through about 5 different beefs before finding the right one for their burgers recently, and it shows! My only gripe with this place is that it is a cash-only business; I would actually probably eat here more often if I didn't have to plan an ATM trip before going here. Awesome place for breakfast or lunch. HEADS UP! This location closes around 2pm-ish.

Some friends and I were in town for the Pikes Peak Intl. Hill Climb and came here for breakfast the morning after to try some local fare. This place is amazing, everyones food was fantastic and flavorful and fresh, flavors were stellar, the atmosphere is great, very cozy and friendly, the staff made the whole experience fun and enjoyable. I had the Heuvos De King Chef and it was killer. Beware the portions are enormous, peak around at others plates before you decide what portion size you want and buy a bottle of green chili sauce to go home because its awesome!

Located close to downtown (off bijou) it adds some character to a virtually non-existent breakfast scene and a modest lunch scene. I work downtown so don't get this this place in the evening, but visit semi-frequently for breakfast and lunch. This place is not for the faint of heart as the portions are big and its good old school food. I like it because its not stuffy and has some character. I would rate this as the best breakfast in town. There really isnt any place like it.

King Chef employee snidely says: really guys? Really? You can't bring in that orange. It's against health code. I return the snide attitude with "I don't work at a restaurant, I don't know these things, I'm sorry" and throw the orange away. King Chef employee as we're leaving: "have an orange filled day" So I walk back in the restaurant, slap the counter, point at him so there is no mistaking who my comment is directed towards and politely tell him "go f#@k yourself." He then screams across the restaurant asking me if I want to take this outside. I gestured to him that his suggestion to handle this matter with violence is perhaps inappropriate. He then follows us outside and advises we shouldn't bother coming back. I make it perfectly clear I have no plans to come back. Then another employee comes out to advise us that we are 86'd. Apparently we are 86'd now. I was so looking forward to going back.

The half Ruben was good as always and the fries crispy like I asked for them to be. Great service in this SMALL 10 inside seat dinner with several outdoor tables. Several folks had breakfast burritos while I ate my lunch and they all looked outstanding.

Don't be daunted by a line, they got us in quick. Don't order the full order, it's too huge, even the half order is big, and we were taking food home. Coffee was slightly above average, not bad but not great. Food was well above average. Green chili was a very nice flavor, but is not as spicy as the warning - I would say more mild to medium (but then I have a scorched GI tract from too many 'blazin wing challenges'.). Wait staff was all young, friendly, cute, and our waitress was psychic (I am a little high maintenance, but she knew what I needed and got it before I asked for it). The best part about the place was sort of intangible - everybody in the place seemed, i dunno, HAPPY.

Fun Experience. Not necessarily my kind of food (too greasy) but we were served quickly and the girl who helped us was very friendly. It is a very tiny diner, but there are a few tables outside in front of the diner, and a few more in the back. Make sure you have cash with you, since they don't accept any credit or debit cards. There is a bank a few minutes walking distance.

This place really is 'As good as it gets' for a greasy spoon. Actually, a few days before going here, I ate at 'TGIF...Friday's' and was totally and utterly disappointed in the burger meal. King's Chef is a local icon! Well, in my book anyway. The day I went, there was a guy there having a meal called 'The Thing'. It was like his 100 and something one. He even let me eat some so I could see what it taste like. He was also on the Food Channel when they featured this diamond in the rough. Anyway, Me and my 2 daughters all had burgers and fries. The fries taste like someone sliced the potatoes right there and fried them up. So amazingly GOOD!!! The burger was one of the best burgers I've had in a very long time. Especially in Colorado Springs, where it is just so hard to find REALLY good & satisfying food. The burger was Angus, I believe. I have this problem with burgers sometimes. They will have like a dead cow flavor or that's what I call it. This burger was melt in my mouth good. No gristle like when you eat at MickieDee's. The patty's where huge which is usually a big problem for my oldest daughter but since she received a 'Clean Plate' sticker...that meat must've been good. This food isn't cheap so come ready to spend about $10 for a meal. The can sodas are like $1.50 which is ridiculous but there food is so good, I bought my daughter 2! LOL!!! Go here and be amazed and you'll understand why they were featured in April on the Food Network. Oh! And they close at like 2pm-ish so come early...leave happy!

I love the feel of the purple castle! The food is great and the waitress makes some of the best sweet tea in town. BUT only the smaller location has sweet tea. I usually am there for lunch time and only get half orders and am completely full when I leave with my "Clean Plate Club member" sticker! Only down side is cash only.

The Good: I like their toasts. The Bad: cash only makes it inconvenient. It is also on the expensive side for breakfast. The Ugly: based on good reviews by others, I thought their breakfast sausage would be of better quality, but their sausage was just like the ones you'd get at McDonald's. The spongy-greasy type of pork meat is mostly made of insides of the pig and not with meat. I asked the owner guy about their sausage the last time I was there, and he was actually proud of the sausage since it came from Iowa. So I was expecting something decent, like the ones you'd get a a decent hotel on the east or west coast. All I can say is there CS needs a better breakfast place that serves quality meats. I give 2 stars because they have quality bread for toasts; otherwise, for the price, I would give them 1 star.

A perfect score for achieving what it sets out to be: humble and awesome. The Grump might be the most devious wonderful breakfast I've ever had. Even the half portion was too much. Gravy was epic. Hash browns (the typical bench mark) were the real deal -- you can watch the cook grate the potatoes onto the grill. MKO had the breakfast burrito and raved about the chile sauce. We evidently arrived at the perfect time because there was plenty of seating...there are only about ten. Good luck with that.

First off, I have to say I really dislike the cash only policy. It is really inconvenient especially when you have to pay the surcharge on the atm. It also makes leaving a tip more of a hassle. The breakfast menu is lacking in choices for people who dont like eggs.

I want more from this place so much more, I love breakfast places and from all the reviews you'd think it was a stellar 5-Star but after going here three times and the food was so so, I can't give it more than a 2-star. Yes the portions are solid but, of nothing more than onions and potatoes it's easy to serve a lot of nothing! It's a solid hangover cure and a relativity cheap meal but, don't expect more than that!
